Behavior Consulting
How we support the dog & family
Behavior is not something that can be “cured”. It is naturally adaptive and necessary for the survival of any animal and its future generations. A dog’s behavior is influenced by many internal and external conditions, which interact through both Nature AND Nurture. All these conditions, or needs, comprise their L.E.G.S.® (Learning, Environment, Genetics, Self).
When “behavior problems” arise with our family dogs, it’s not a matter of obedience, or that they just need more “training”. Rather, these “problems” are complex needs that are not being met - an imbalance or friction in their L.E.G.S. - and often are being expressed through ‘normal’ canine-specific behaviors, albeit, in ways that may be “undesirable” for us humans.
Through a behavior consult/Family Dog Mediation® we FIRST understand the dog’s unique L.E.G.S., and then consider how that all intersects with the needs and expectations of the family. From there we can provide humane and reward-based strategies aimed at meeting needs, and restoring harmony to the human-canine relationship.
This is a team approach, which involves the family and their dog, the behavior consultant; and collaboration with the veterinary team and other dog professionals. Each party plays a unique role in supporting the well-being of the dog, and family, in front of us!
