About Us
When there are "behavior problems", it's really an indication of unmet needs in a dog's life — some friction or imbalance in their L.E.G.S.
At Leaps and Hounds Behavior, we offer guidance to first understand a dog’s needs and the WHYs of their behavior through L.E.G.S.® (Learning, Environment, Genetics, Self), a Model of Integrated Canine Science. L.E.G.S. describes the whole and unique picture of the dog in front of us - all the internal and external conditions (needs) which influence their behavior.
Family Dog Mediation® helps us understand how that all intersects with the family’s needs/resources. We then provide practical, humane solutions to support needs and Total Welfare (the Five Domains of Animal Welfare). Supporting L.E.G.S. and welfare is the essence of our work with families and dogs.
In order to fulfill our mission of providing educational support and guidance for the community to enhance the welfare of animals, we also pursue continuing education. This includes regularly attending workshops on animal behavior, incorporating the latest scientific research and understanding across multiple disciplines, consulting with peers; and adherence to professional ethics outlined in certification and licensing requirements (see below).
